TRANSCRIPT:

I’m going to talk to you today about how to become a very competent, intuitive tarot card reader.

I’ve been reading Tarot Cards since I was 15 years old. And I’ve both explored the way that other people recommend you learn how to read tarot. And I also really cultivated my own way of reading Tarot. One of the things that I implemented came from my work in Depth Psychology, which does a lot of dream interpretation work. And one of the first things that you’ll find in the dream interpretation world is everybody wants to use the references in books, right?

You have a dream about a shark, or you have a dream about eating mac and cheese, and you pick up your book or you go online, and you look up shark. Shark means aggressive tendencies, or you look up macaroni and cheese, and it says, eating pasta means that you’re a little bit afraid of the dark or something, right?

Well, the first process that we’re going to look at when it comes to becoming a very competent, intuitive tarot card reader is becoming intimate with your cards.

So most people will teach you to learn and memorize all of your cards, get them down pat, understand all the different meanings that you find in a particular interpretive text. But tarot cards represent a particular archetypal energy, which means that that energy is not just a static energy. It’s an energy that represents a living, dynamic system. So looking up the meaning in a book, while that’s helpful and can give you a bit of an overarching understanding. The truth is when you’re reading Tarot cards, you’re in a relationship with a particular energy.

So the first recommendation is to get to know your cards intimately. Explore them, look at the images on them, start to journal about them. What did the images themselves say to you? What do you feel in your body? What do you notice when you look at what you see? Allow yourself to get curious about what arises in you. So definitely take time to pull cards, sit with them, look at them. Notice what comes up in your mind, notice what comes up in your psyche and in your emotions when you look at this card and when you attempt to relate to the card itself. So the first thing you can do is get to know your cards intimately before going through all the definitions and all the memorization. Just spend time with your cards, develop a relationship.

The next thing you can do to really develop your intuitive tarot card abilities is to pull a card every single day. Make it a part of your daily ritual to pull at least one card or a few cards every single day. One of the biggest hurdles with tarot card reading is actually breaking down some of your disbelief in what’s possible. We all have very rational minds that have experienced the way that life works. And we’ve been told that we’re separate individuals, that we live in our bodies, and we’re not necessarily in relationship with our environment or with the psychic energies that are around us.

So pulling a card every day, thinking about it, and seeing what shows up during the day that reflects or connects with the card that you pulled up starts to break down this misperception that we’re not living in an active, living universe. It shows us that life is responsive to us, that there’s an actual learning process that wants to happen. This can do wonders because it’s showing you just how real this relationship can be. The more you understand the reality of that relationship, the more the cards speak to you and become a powerful ally.

A really great three-card set that you can pull every single day is: one, what is it that I most need to know today? That can be your first card. The second card can be, what is it that I most need to communicate today? And the third one is, what is it that I most need to do to nourish my soul? This is a great beginner set just to give yourself a rhythm and to notice what shows up and what life reflects to you when you pull this kind of card set each day. That being said, it can be helpful to just start with one card a day. That way, you’re not overwhelming yourself with new information. Rather, just pull one card that has to do with what you most need to know and just be with that card, explore it, notice what’s showing up.

The third piece that is really important in developing your intuitive tarot card capacity is to respect the cards every time you pull a card. Give yourself time to be with the answer that you got, respect the information that’s shown up. Give it the benefit of the doubt that you’ve been given the information that you actually need. Give yourself time to digest it, be with it, even if that’s for a few days. There’s some kind of information that’s coming from the card that you pulled. So give yourself time to find out and to learn what it is that’s being reflected to you. Don’t just pull again and again and again, trying to get a more precise answer. You want to give yourself space, give yourself room to hear the answer that you received.

I know that it’s tempting to go, “Okay, I’m going to keep pulling until I get the answer that I really want, or until it really makes sense to me.” But give yourself time to reflect on it. Be willing to journal about the confusion that’s showing up and what it might mean for you. If you keep pulling cards and you keep just trying to get the answer that you’re wanting, what you’re doing is you’re setting up a negative relationship with your cards. You’re saying, “You’re not giving me the answers that I want, and I don’t trust what you’re giving to me.” And that’s setting up an energetic relationship with your cards where the answers are just going to continue to be unclear. Give yourself time to be opening up this new intuitive capacity and this relationship with your cards. If you treat your cards with respect, the cards will become clearer, they will give you information that can literally transform your life.

There’s a serious depth to the spiritual practice and the self-evolution that can happen if you’re building a powerful relationship with your cards. I hope this is helpful. I’ve used the cards for a very long time. They’ve been integral in my own growth process. And honestly, it just depends on how deep you want to go with your relationship with the cards. It can be superficial, you can just ask about just your love life, just money, just these things, and that’s fine. But you can also use these cards as a pathway to your own self-growth and evolution. It depends on how deep you want to take it. And to be honest with you, once you find it inside of yourself, you can be a powerful asset to your friends, your family because not only have you developed a relationship with the cards, but you’re growing your intuitive muscles as well. You won’t need the cards necessarily; you’ll be able to start to sense the deep patterns of life.

I love your ideas of creating a relationship with the Tarot cards just one card a day and then going further, y using three.
I like the connection of being psychic and creative.
